BACKGROUND
The PLUS Project Final Conference on Sustainability and Education for Sustainable Development aims to bring together all PLUS partner universities, global experts, educators, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to advance the discourse on sustainable development through education. This conference will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaboration to foster innovative approaches for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sustainability and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a highly relevant theme for Universidade Pedagógica de Maputo (UP-Maputo) as it plays a key role in training educators who can integrate sustainability into Mozambique’s education system. Given the country’s vulnerability to climate change, environmental challenges, and socio-economic inequalities, ESD equips students with the knowledge and skills to promote resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and community engagement. UP-Maputo can leverage local and global knowledge systems to foster culturally relevant sustainability practices while contributing to research, policy development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Additionally, integrating sustainability into its academic programs enhances international partnerships, funding opportunities, and career prospects in the green economy and education sectors, reinforcing the university’s role in Mozambique’s sustainable development.
The conference agenda will include keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops addressing key themes such as climate resilience, sustainable pedagogy, curriculum integration, and community-based sustainability initiatives. Participants will explore best practices in ESD implementation, innovative teaching methodologies, and policy frameworks that support sustainability in education. Special sessions will highlight regional challenges and opportunities, enabling institutions like UP-Maputo in the Latin American and Southern African regions as well as in Europe to tailor strategies that align with local contexts. The conference will also facilitate networking opportunities for researchers and practitioners, fostering long-term collaborations that drive impactful change in sustainability education.
